What is Deaf Awareness and why is it important?

Many people are not aware of the difficulties in communication faced by those who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing. Understanding and resolving these issues can be key to preventing frustration and isolation, helping to create a workplace that is inclusive for all.

We have an in-depth knowledge of deaf and disability issues and can offer consultation and support to improve the accessibility within your workplace.
Our training develops awareness and confidence, to remove uncertainty and sometimes fear of doing the wrong thing when working with deaf colleagues. During our training, we aim to increase knowledge around different levels of hearing loss and methods of communication, and what support is available to meet these needs.
The workshops we provide are tailored to the needs of the participants and offered in a relaxed and informal manner so they can get as much information as possible from them, including the opportunity to ask questions. It is also beneficial to meet any deaf colleagues to ensure that all needs are being met.

This course will explore the following areas:

  • What is Deaf Awareness and why do we need it?
  • Different Communication methods
  • Overcoming barriers in communication, including Do’s and Don’ts
  • Sign Language Interpreters – who are they and how do they work?
  • Usher Syndrome

It is also a great opportunity to ask questions. These are often around the use of an interpreter, or why written English can be a challenge. There is also often an assumption that deaf people can use captions in a meeting, however how they can contribute to any discussions as a sign language user can be overlooked.  You can ask anything! Some of the diverse questions include whether or not deaf people can drive… (yes, we can!)

Equality and Inclusion

What does this actually mean?

Do you think your company needs to be more accessible? Are you sure you’re up to date with the Equality Act and how it affects you?

Do you think your company needs to be more accessible? Are you sure you’re up to date with the Equality Act and how it affects you?

Our workshops are aimed at providing you with the tools to ensure that your organisation is accessible to all. Our keywords are Disability Smart and our format is interactive and informative.

Our belief is that any training is beneficial to all. To allow everyone access to your information, goods or services is not only good for business, but also good for attracting staff and maintaining positive team morale.

Our workshops aim to:

  • Aid understanding of some of the barriers faced by disabled people and how we can help overcome them.
  • Show how the workplace can be more accessible and inclusive.
  • Discuss Disability Etiquette. What is it? What is the correct way?
  • Understand your role and responsibilities as defined in the Equality Act
