What is Deaf Awareness and why is it important?

Many people are not aware of the difficulties in communication faced by those who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing. Understanding and resolving these issues can be key to preventing frustration and isolation, helping to create a workplace that is inclusive for all.

We have an in-depth knowledge of deaf and disability issues and can offer consultation and support to improve accessibility within your workplace.

Bringing Deaf Awareness to Your Workplace

Our Deaf awareness training is designed to raise the awareness of the issues faced by Deaf people in the workplace and also to remove the uncertainty and fear of doing the wrong thing when working with deaf colleagues.

During our Deaf awareness training, your team will learn about different levels of hearing loss as well as how they can better communicate and support the needs of those who are Deaf.

The workshops we provide are entirely tailored to the needs of their participants and are offered in a relaxed and informal manner to ensure that those taking part can get as much out of them as possible. There will also be plenty of opportunities for participants to ask questions. These are often around the use of an interpreter, or why written English can be a challenge. There is also often an assumption that deaf people can use captions in a meeting, however, how they can contribute to any discussions as a sign language user can be overlooked.  You can ask anything! Some of the diverse questions include whether or not deaf people can drive… (yes, we can!)

If a Deaf colleague is present, then it is also beneficial for us to meet them. It is also beneficial to meet any deaf colleagues to ensure that all of their needs are being met.

This course will explore the following areas:

  • What is Deaf Awareness and why do we need it?
  • Different Communication methods
  • Overcoming barriers in communication, including Do’s and Don’ts
  • Sign Language Interpreters – who are they and how do they work?
  • Usher Syndrome
  • Language Deprivation and Hearing Privilege
  • Potential solutions to barriers that may arise
  • BSL Act 2022
