Food for thoughts by Sophie of WealdBSL...

Are you aware that deaf people are facing daily communication barriers with everyone wearing masks? With many deaf and hard of hearing people relying on lip reading, masks can cause additional anxiety whilst being out and about. Will I need to speak to anyone? Will anyone try to speak to me? How will we understand each other?

My shopping trip last week is a great example. I visited my local butcher and asked him to remove his mask so I could speak with him, but he couldn’t understand what I was asking. I was aware that there was a lady watching me try to explain, which was making me even more uncomfortable - up until the point she stepped forward to support me. She was able to use basic sign language to assist us both. What a relief! I’m very independent, and don’t like to rely on others to help me communicate, but this lady was so helpful and I was enormously grateful to her for her support.

Would you have been able to do the same thing? Why not take on a new challenge, and take the first steps to learning this beautiful language?
